Goal $6,125
460 pages of her outgoing letters, 1770 to 1800, copied out by her son James. The images are already online, but the words are not searchable, so in practice no one can find anything in them. Transcription will make every word searchable and far more accessible to researchers, students and the public.
Goal $3,783
124 letters acquired by Massachusetts Historical Society in 2025 through the descendants of Charles Adams. Most were exchanged among four generations of Adams women: Abigail, her daughter-in-law Sarah, her granddaughter Susanna and Susanna’s daughter Susan, with four from Louisa Catherine Adams. A family history told entirely by its women, never before published or made available online.
Goal $3,750
About a hundred manuscript pages of Mercy Otis Warren that sit inside other people’s manuscript collections rather than her own. This project will bring them together digitally and make their contents searchable.
Goal $3,531
An unfinished oil portrait of Abigail Adams, painted between 1810 and 1814 by an unknown artist after the Gilbert Stuart portrait in the National Portrait Gallery. The canvas and frame are stable, but the portrait is in need of surface cleaning. It would go to a painting conservator, who would take it out of its frame to clean it. Abigail was still living when this was painted.
Goal $1,925
“Remember the Ladies” read in full, along with excerpts from seven additional letters, by historic interpreters, for Massachusetts Historical Society’s teaching resource Revolutionary Abigail Adams. Teachers have been asking for these for years. This is the piece of the project that reaches a classroom.
Goal $5,000
A silk pin cushion attributed to Mercy Otis Warren and used by her. The embroidered front is stable, but the back of the silk pouch is fraying and torn and requires conservation. It would go to an artifact conservator. Of everything in this project, this is the one thing she held in her hands.
All six projects: $24,114
Each amount includes all associated costs from the Massachusetts Historical Society. Gifts of any amount are welcome and will help move each component toward its funding goal. Because work can begin only after a component is fully funded, an individual Daughter, chapter or district may also choose to fund or “adopt” a component in full.
Please note: Every gift to the Massachusetts DAR State Regent’s Project, Remember the Ladies, helps bring this important work to life. If a project component receives more than its funding goal, the additional funds will support another component of Remember the Ladies. If gifts exceed the overall project goal of $24,114, any remaining funds will remain in the Massachusetts DAR State Regent’s Project account to support a future initiative of the State Regent’s Project.
